You will study how the voice can be used as an instrument, versatility and it's place within music.

Elements of Music

The building blocks of music in relation to the 7 elements and how they are used together to create music.

Timbre

Looking at the families of instruments that make up an orchestra . Brass, String, Woodwind and Percussion

Melody

Major, minor, pentatonic and chromatic scales. Musical Literacy

Harmony

Learning chords as a harmony part. Learning how to play them on classroom instruments. Keyboard, Ukulele, glockenspiel

Form and Structure

To learn about Binary, Ternary and Rondo form in music

Year 8

World Music

Traiditional Chinese music and African drumming

Film Music

Music and mood and the effect of music in film - devices and compositional techniques used.

Blues

Ensemble performance and blues composition

Hooks and Riffs

Performance in larger ensembles. Learning some current songs demonstrating effective use of hooks and riffs.

Songwriting

Composing a pop song - lyrics and music.

Music of Black Origin

Understanding the concept behind MOBO music, awards and learning to perform MOBO songs.

We all use our voice in some way. Students will have had experience of some singing in Primary schools - more than likely unison singing.

The use of the voice in music to include beat boxing, singing, rap, part singing, range of the voice, identifying types of voices.

You may know specific information about one instrument if you were involved in WO in Primary School. You may be able to recognise certain instruments by sight and by sound.

Learning why certain instruments belong in a family and what that means in terms of the way the sound is produced and similarities.

Aural recognition of instruments. The science behind the sound production of each instrument. Knowledge of timbre and tone colour. How certain sounds can have certain effects. Learn the names of more instruments. Layout of an orchestra and role of conductor.

Cultural Capital

Certain amount of development of instruments through time. Range of composers looked into.El Sistema project in Venezuela and Simon Bolivar Orchestra conducted by Gustavo Dudamel.
