Year 9
Cell Biology
In topic 1 Cell biology you will study the structure and function of eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. You will discover how cells grow and divide and how key nutrients are transported into and out of cells. You will also learn about how cells are being used for development of medical and hygiene treatments.

Organisation
In topic 2 Organisation you will study the structure and function of some of the organ systems within the body, including the digestive and circulatory system. You will also learn about some diseases and medical conditions that can affect these systems. The topic will also encompass work on plants, looking specifically at organs of a plant and the plant transport system
Read MoreInfection and Response
In topic 3 Infection and response you will study communicable diseases, the body's defence system and medical treatments for diseases. You will also learn about the diseases that plants can get, how these can be spread and treated.
Read MoreBioenergetics
In topic 4 bioenergetics you will study photosynthesis. You will learn about how a plant makes and uses it's own food and the factors that can affect the rate at which it does so. You will also study respiration, both aerobic and anaerobic as well as the effect exercise has on the body and metabolism.

Homeostasis and response
In topic 5 Homeostasis and response you will study how the body controls it's internal environment. You will look in detail at the nervous system and endocrine system and learn about coordination of processes controlled by these, for example water levels in the body, temperature, glucose levels and hormones in human reproduction. You will discover how particular organs work, for example the brain, eye and kidney. You will also learn about the effect of hormones on plant growth.
Read MoreInheritance, variation and evolution
• This topic studies the structure of DNA, how it is copied and how we inherit our features. It also leads onto evolution and variation as well as looking at selective breeding and genetic engineering.
Read MoreEcology
• This topic studies how living things are adapted for survival, how energy is passed along a food chain and how nutrients are recycled in an ecosystem. It also investigates human impact on the environment and methods needed to maintain biodiversity.
